One of my favorite songs concerning the cross of Jesus is entitled “Man of Sorrows”.  It is a favorite, because it brings so much Scripture together in so few lyrics.  Let us consider:

Man of sorrows what a name (Isa. 53:3) for the Son of God who came (Matt. 16:16) ruined sinners to reclaim (Rom. 5:8-9) hallelujah what a Savior (Luke 2:11).

Bearing shame and scoffing rude (Mark 15:17-20) in my place condemned He stood (Isa. 53:5) sealed my pardon with His blood (Rev. 1:5) hallelujah what a Savior (Matt. 1:21).

Guilty, vile and helpless we (Eph. 2:12-13) spotless Lamb of God was He (1 Peter 1:19) full atonement can it be (Rom. 5:10-11) hallelujah what a Savior (Isa. 53:11).

Lifted up was He to die (John 12:32) it is finished was His cry (John 19:30) now in heaven exalted high (Eph. 1:20) hallelujah what a Savior (Heb. 5:9).

When He comes our glorious King (Acts 1:11) all His ransomed home to bring (1 Thess. 4:17) then anew this song we’ll sing (Rev. 5:9) hallelujah what a Savior (Eph. 5:23).

We teach, admonish and learn from the songs of the scripture (Col. 3:16).  May we ever hold them as precious.
