Being thankful is a commanded behavior (Col. 3:15). Since it is a commanded behavior we know that it is an extraordinary response that we must continually develop and work to maintain. Like love it must be learned (Titus 2:4) and practiced. Thankfulness is contrasted with worldly behavior in Ephesians 5:4. Being unthankful is a characteristic of those who know not God (Rom 1:21). Therefore as Christians we must work to strengthen and maintain a life of thanksgiving.
In Ephesians 5:20 we are instructed to give thanks always (at all times) for all things. We are to be thankful in everything for this is the will of God (1 Thess. 5:18). The giving of thanks is described as a way to walk worthy of the Lord, giving thanks because we are partakers of the inheritance of the saints (Col. 1:-12).
So if we want to be pleasing to the Lord we must ask ourselves, are we thankful? Do we work on and practice this Christian way of life? Do we take the time to reflect upon all that God has done for us, in both pleasant and challenging times? A life of thanksgiving is pleasing to God and beneficial to us. Keep the faith!
