In Mark 13: 28-31 there is a parable spoken by our Lord concerning the fig tree. The parable was meant to illustrate to the Jewish nation that there would be observable events leading up to the promised judgement of God. Jesus told the Jews that their generation would not pass until all of the things previously described were fulfilled (vs 30). The Jews were to take heed to these words. Jesus goes on to say “Heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not pass away” (vs 31). Surely these things did come to pass with the destruction of Jerusalem (AD 70) and the fall of the Hebrew nation. So what is a lesson that we can take away from this parable of the fig tree?
The evidence of the scripture (Heb. 11:1) clearly describes for us what happens when we die (Luke 16:19-31). The word further shows how Jesus will return and what will occur if we are still living (1 Thess. 4:16-18). We know that no generation will escape the judgement of Christ (2 Cor. 5:10).
Just as God kept His word to bring judgement upon the Hebrew nation He will keep His word to judge each of us. Will we follow the evidence? Are we prepared? If not then let’s begin today! Let’s not be foolish (Matt.25:1-13).
