In Matt 6: 9-13 Jesus taught his disciples to pray. Within that prayer there is a request made of the Father to “lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.” In our Christian walk God does not tempt us with evil (Jas. 1:13); however, temptation will come when we are drawn away after our own lusts and enticed (Jas. 1:14). We will also experience trials as we determine and practice our obedience to Gods Word (Heb. 11:17).
There are several ways that we are helped in our effort to resist temptation. We practice introspection (Jas. 1:23-24) and self-control (1 Cor. 9:24-27). We are strengthened through our diligence (2 Tim. 2:15) and by our exercise/practice (Heb. 5:12-14). We utilize the wisdom that comes from prayer (Jas. 1:5). And finally we are uplifted and encouraged by our brethren (Eph. 4:11-13) including help when we are overcome (Gal. 6:1-2).
God has promised that there is a way of escape (1 Cor. 10:13). As Christians we must be diligent to find the way, never forgetting that not putting ourselves in an environment to be tempted is often the first and best course of escape (2 Tim. 2:22).
