Many today may wonder if they really know God.  They practice some form of religion but do they really know God?  Christians may practice New Testament Christianity but still have that nagging question on their heart. The apostle John, writing by the Spirit during the times of the gnostic clarified this for us.  The gnostic claimed to know God and yet disregarded His word.  Sound familiar?

In 1 John 2:3-6 we read of the progression to being in a relationship with God.  We know and keep on knowing Him (v 3), the love of God is completed and we know that we are in Him (vs 4-5), and finally we abide in Him (vs 6).  This progression and yea the relationship itself depends upon keeping His commandments (vs 3), keeping His word (vs 5), and walking even as He walked (vs 6).

We come to know God in faith (Rom 10:17; Heb 11:6).  We get into Christ through our obedience and baptism (Gal 3:27), and we abide in Him by walking in the light (1 John 1: 5-7).    It is in Christ that we enjoy all spiritual blessings (Eph 1:3).

So, we can know the answer to our lingering question; Do I Love God?  An affirmative answer requires diligence on our part; the negative requires little.    Which is it?
