Philippians chapter 4 is a very encouraging and uplifting portion of the Scripture.  In the text the Apostle Paul, by Inspiration, expresses his love for the brethren, thanks them for their support, gives them a formula for lasting peace and expresses optimism for the faith and faithful.  He then closes the letter by saying “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit” (ASV 1901).

From this text we are reminded that we have a human spirit that exists separate from the flesh (1 Thess. 5:23; 2nd Cor. 5:1-8; Eccl. 12:7) and that as faithful members of the body of Christ we have been and are afforded grace. The word grace is properly described as unmerited favor and truly our salvation depends upon it (Eph. 2:8).  There is however further definition which includes; that which affords joy, delight, sweetness, goodwill, lovingkindness and mercy.

The blessing and benefit of grace is truly something that we should desire and meditate upon; regardless of the hardship that we are experiencing.  We often sing the words “I love my Savior, He loves me too.  I seek his favor (grace and favor) in everything I do” (I Love My Savior Too).

Surely we seek His grace.  Surely we receive it.  May we always appreciate this relationship with our Lord.
