In John Chapter 4 we read the account of Jesus wearied and sitting on Jacobs well.  It was about noontime (vs 6).  There came at that same time a Samaritan woman to draw water.   Jesus asked her for a drink (vs 7).  The woman responded by questioning why Jesus, as a Jew, would have any dealings with a Samaritan (vs 9).  Jesus then says “If thou knewest the gift of God and who it is that saith to thee give me to drink thou wouldest have asked of Him and He would have given thee living water” (vs 10).  The woman is puzzled and asked Jesus where he would get such water and if He was greater than Jacob, the patriarch. (vs 11-12).  Jesus responds that whoever drank of Jacobs water would thirst again but “whosoever drinketh the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up to everlasting life” (vs 14).  This was a promise of salvation.

We as Christians drank of and continue to be blessed by that water.  We have known Jesus in faith responding to his call.  We have taken of the water of life freely (Rev 22:17).  We are recipients of that continual washing (Acts 2:38; 1 John 1:7) and are renewed day by day as we look to the eternal (2 Cor. 4:14-18).  In the words of the song writer Horatius Bonar:

I heard the voice of Jesus say,

”Behold I freely give”

The living water; thirsty one,

Stoop down and drink and live.”

What a blessing it is to be in Christ.
