In 1st Corinthians 10: 16-17 the scripture discusses the Lord’s Supper.  In verse 16 our observance of this memorial is described as a communion (fellowship).  The Spirit, by Paul, continues in verse 17 by revealing, “For we being many are one bread and one body: for we are all partakers of one bread”.

The description of Christians as the one bread is both comforting and challenging.  As obedient baptized believers, we are the one bread (body of Christ, 1 Cor. 11:24) which is the Church (Col 1:18). We are partakers of all spiritual blessings found only in Christ (Eph. 1:3) and look forward to heaven as the saved body.  The hope of heaven is truly comforting.

The challenge presented in the verse: “we being many are one” speaks of the unity of the Church.  As the Church, Christians are to be unified in purpose, obedience and service based upon truth (1st Cor. 1:10; Eph. 4:15-16).  When God’s word is taught by the faithful and the able (2 Tim 2:2), and the hearers are willing to receive “hearing by the word of God” (Rom. 10:17) there will be unity in the Church. Whether teacher or hearer are we meeting the challenge?
