In First Corinthians 3:11 Jesus Christ is described as the foundation of the Church.  “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid which is Jesus Christ”.  This truth was according to prophecy (Isaiah 28:16; Psalms 118:22-23).  In verses 12-14 the Apostle warns that teachers in the Church at Corinth were not teaching in a way that would develop a strong and faithful Church upon this foundation.  As J.W. McGarvey wrote concerning this passage, “The Church should be built of true Christians, (the proper material); and not of worldly minded hypocrites or those who estimate the oracles of God as on par with the philosophies of men.”

1 Peter 2:2-10 continues this theme describing the people of God as “lively (living) stones built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood; to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ” (vs. 5). By faithfully teaching the Word and then practicing (obeying) the same we are pleasing to God.  When we do this, we are alive In Christ (Gal 3:27) and may truly sing “my hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness.” What a blessing it is to have the hope of the Gospel (Col. 1:23).
