The immediate context of 1 Timothy 5:21-25 is the relationship to and the treatment of elders. The passage instructs us that the sin of some men is evident while the sin of others is hidden. Likewise the good of some is sometimes not immediately evident but will be made manifest as time goes on. As one writer (DeWelt) has concluded, the message of the passage is wait awhile before the appointment of elders since in this period of proving, the character of men will be made known.
When leadership fails due to sin there are consequences not only to the sinner but to those of us who follow. Some followers will fall completely away, while others will become discouraged with the work. We must be careful not to let this happen.
Care must be taken to always examine ourselves whether we be in the faith taking heed to our life and doctrine. (2 Cor. 13:5; 1 Tim. 4:16). Elders should take heed unto themselves that they faithfully serve and not speak distorted or corrupt things – drawing others away after them (Acts 20:28-30).
The Christian life is an awesome blessing and responsibility. Be watchful for the consequences are great.
