In Titus 3:1-8, after instructing Titus to put the brethren in mind to be “ready to every good work”, he reminds him of the grace received in obedience to the Gospel thereby making Christians “heirs according to the hope of eternal life”. The word “heir” means receiving by apportionment. We as Christians may rightfully hope to inherit eternal life. Why an inheritance? Because we are the children of God (Heb. 12; Gal 3:26) and have complied with the “will” of the One who is granting apportionment (Matt 7:21). The Scripture affirms this heirship of the obedient in several passages (Jas. 2:5; Rom. 8:17; Gal 4:7). A great and precious promise!
Paul continues in verse 8 to exhort Titus to “affirm constantly that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works.” This is also the admonition in verse 1.
Oft times today we are excited about receiving the inheritance without being dedicated to keeping the Will. Messengers of Satan try to convince us that the issues of the day are simply subjective, gray areas upon which there should be unity. The Devil’s lie repeated (Gen 3:4). Be steadfast and receive the promise (1 Cor. 15:58).
