When considering the question of Jesus from the cross, “My God, My God why hast Thou forsaken Me?”, it is important to remember first that these words were a fulfillment of prophesy (Psalm 22:1) and secondly that the death of Jesus was not ordinary. It was not the death of a martyr or just someone who was executed for a crime that they did not commit. This has happened many times in history. This was different. Jesus had voluntarily laid down His life and “no man taketh it from” Him (John10:18).
Jesus was to bear our griefs and carry our sorrows. He was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities (Isaiah 53:4-5). He “was made to be sin for us, who knew no sin” (2 Cor. 5:21) and it pleased the Father to bruise Him (Isaiah 53:10). No one living today can understand fully what that entailed. Jesus bore our sins. He took our place.
Sin separates man from God (Isaiah 59:2). “But God be thanked that ye (we) were the servants of sin but ye (we) have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered unto you (us), being then made free from sin, ye (we) became the servants of righteousness” (Rom 6:17-18). Have we obeyed the Lord? We should.
