In James chapter 4 the brethren are instructed to live righteous lives and to cease their fondness of the world.  In verse 7 we are told to “Submit yourselves therefore to God.  Resist (stand against) the devil and he will flee from you”.  Then in verse 8 we are instructed to draw nigh (make near or approach) unto God and he will draw nigh to you…”

Linguist of the ancient word tell us that the term “draw nigh” is an injunction to get close to God and that the tense designates a decisive and once-for-all act, with no loitering or hesitancy. In Isaiah 55:6 the scripture says “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon Him while he is near”.  And in Acts 17:27 we are told that if we seek the Lord we will find Him, for “He be not far from every one of us”.

How do we seek the Lord?  We must seek Him deliberately and faithfully (Isaiah 59:1-2).  Seek Him in obedience (John 3:21), His word (2 Peter 1: 1-11), prayer (1 Thes. 5:17), worship (John 4:23-24; Heb. 10:23-25) and our daily observation (Rom 1:19-20). Always remembering the need for diligence, for in Heb. 11:6 the reward comes to those who diligently seek Him.
