In James chapter 3:17-18 the scripture discusses the pure, peaceable and gentle wisdom from above and the fruits of righteousness “sown in peace of them that make peace” (vs18). Chapter 4 changes the subject to the lust and fighting of the covetous. James tells the brethren that they are in conflict with others over things rather than relying upon their Father in Heaven for providential care. He tells some that they receive not the blessings of God because they ask not and others because they ask incorrectly.
James 4:3 says; “Ye ask and receive not, because ye ask amiss (improperly or wrongly), that ye may consume (expend or squander) it upon your own lusts (sensual delight or pleasure)”. The word consume is the same word translated “spent all” with reference to the prodigal son (Luke 15:14). The word lusts is the same word translated pleasure with reference to Moses in “pleasures of sin for a season” (Heb. 11:25).
In order to please God in prayer we must keep our desires in check. We must remember that the prayer that Jesus taught included several spiritual matters and a simple request for daily bread (Matt 6:9-13). The balance and proper attitude for the Christian is summed up in 3 John verse 2 which reads; “I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth”. The spiritual is always the priority. Everything else is subordinate. Pray with this in mind and we will not ask amiss.
