In 2nd Timothy 4:2 there is an instruction to preach the word.  This is so simple and yet profound.  It is a concept that many are moving away from today.  Gone are the multiple day gospel meetings, the hour long sermons and the extensive use of reading and quotation of Scripture.  Today the message must be short, sweet and entertaining if we are to be expected to pay attention. Often the Scripture is only paraphrased. These things ought not to be.

The Word of God (1 Thess. 2:13) includes the deep things of God (1 Cor. 2:9-10), is alive (Heb. 4:12) and is Truth (2nd Tim 2:15).  The Word contains all things pertaining to life and godliness (2 Pet. 1:3), will equip us for every good work (2 Tim 3:16-17), and is the seed that will make us grow as a Christian (Lk. 8: 11, 15). It abides forever (1 Pet. 1:23-25, Matt. 24:35), is able to save our souls (Jas. 1:21) and is the standard by which we will be judged (John 12:48, Rev. 20:12). All true disciples abide in the word (John 8:31).  Those who preach the word are to be valued (Rom. 10:15) while those who pervert it are accursed (Rev. 22:18-19, Gal. 1:7-8).

In consideration of the above let’s renew our appreciation and desire for the Word (2 Tim 2:15). Love those who preach it faithfully and reject the contemporary story/paraphrase and entertainment culture.  Preaching, teaching and receiving the word are serious matters..
