Jesus has great compassion for us. He is touched with our grief (Luke 7:13). In the raising of Lazarus recorded in John 11 this compassion is evident. He braved great danger in order to visit his friends in their time of sorrow (vs. 8). Jesus comforted Mary and Martha in their loss. He spoke to Martha of the resurrection and eternal life (vs. 25). Then upon observing the grief of Mary and her comforters He wept (vs. 35).
At this time Jesus prayed “Father I thank Thee that Thou hast heard Me. And I knew that Thou hearest Me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that Thou hast sent Me” (vs. 41-42). He then called Lazarus forth from the grave.
How may we apply the actions of Jesus to our lives? Jesus was compassionate even at expense/risk to himself. He prayed before he began his work (Matt. 9:37-38). Jesus made sure that God received the glory for the effort (Eph. 3:21). By praying He demonstrated that He was doing the work of God (Matt. 5:16).
A compassionate and prayerful walk is the example. Will we follow?
