In Romans 8:1 the apostle Paul contrasts the Mosaic Law, with its inability to destroy sin and free man from it, to the new covenant of those who are in Christ.  Under the perfect law of liberty (Jas. 1:23) “there is now no condemnation to them that are in Christ.” This assurance should give hope to those of us who are in Christ (1 Pet. 1:3) while those outside of Christ should consider these words as a sobering warning (2 Thess. 1:8).

The Scripture is clear on the subject of how we get into Christ.  It is not by belief alone for “devils believe and tremble” (Jas. 2:19) and It is not by faith only (Jas. 2:24).  We learn from the Scripture that we are made free from sin when we obey the doctrine (Rom. 6:1-18) including baptism to “wash away our sins” (Acts 22:16).    Prior to obedience and baptism we are outside of Christ for we are “baptized into Christ” (Gal. 3:27).  To be baptized into Christ is to be “baptized into one body” (1 Cor 12:13); which is His Church (Col. 1:18).

Does Romans 8:1 offer us hope or condemnation?  Are we living faithful in Christ?
